Standard processing for the eTA takes about three working days. However, you should submit your application at least two weeks early to give yourself a comfortable time frame. Once you receive approval, save a digital copy to your cell phone and keep a printed version in your carry-on bag.
Health and Vaccination Rules
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises U.S. travelers to stay up to date on routine vaccines before visiting Kenya. Doctors often recommend vaccines for typhoid and hepatitis A. For malaria, you will need a prescription for prophylaxis pills. You should schedule a routine visit to a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you leave to get the right anti-malarial medication for your specific itinerary.
Direct flights from the United States to Kenya do not require a yellow fever vaccination certificate. However, travelers arriving from a country where yellow fever is common must show proof of vaccination. This rule also applies to airport transits longer than 12 hours in endemic areas.
Safari trips extending to other East African stops, like Tanzania or Uganda, require a yellow fever certificate. These neighboring countries view Kenya as a risk zone.
