FAQ

Most travelers from visa-exempt countries (including the U.S., UK, EU, and Australia) do not need a visa for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days. You will receive a "Temporary Visitor" stamp in your passport upon arrival.

Important entry requirements for 2026:

  • Visit Japan Web (Digital Fast-Track): While paper forms still exist, travelers are strongly encouraged to register via Visit Japan Web before departing. This generates a QR code for both Immigration and Customs, allowing you to use the new "Joint Kiosks" at major airports like Haneda and Narita, saving you 20–30 minutes in line.
  • Mandatory ID Law: You must carry your original physical passport at all times. It is a legal requirement in Japan for foreign nationals to produce their passport if requested by local authorities; a photocopy or digital photo is not legally sufficient.
  • Upcoming JESTA Requirement (2028): Starting in fiscal year 2028, Japan will launch JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization). This will be a mandatory online pre-screening for all travelers who currently enjoy visa-exempt status.
